O'Neil Street ReOpens to Vehicle Traffic after Greenway Tunnel Installed Underneath
O'Neil Street is back open to drivers following a 9-week closure to accommodate a $3.5 million project to build a pedestrian tunnel under O'Neil and allow for an exciting extension of our popular Sam's Branch Greenway. Fred Smith Company reopened the road around 1 p.m on Friday, August 14th. Just five days later than the original schedule due to Hurricane Isaias. Thanks for everyone's patience. The greenway tunnel/trailhead/parking lot and extension will open this fall. We'll have more details on August 26th following a construction update meeting.

Phase 2 Extended to Sept. 11 - Town Facilities Remain CLOSED - Masks Required in Public
The State of North Carolina has once again extended Phase II and will require face masks in public through at least September 11. All Town facilities remain closed, but employees are working and can be reached at 919-553-5002. People must wear face coverings when in public places, indoors or outdoors, where physical distancing of 6 feet from other people who aren’t in the same household isn’t possible. They're required for all employees and customers of retail businesses & restaurants.

Town Council Approves Clayton's 2021 Budget
With the backdrop of a health pandemic and economic crisis, the 2021 Town Budget continues to provide our current services and does not include a lot of new and expansion items. There is no tax rate increase and no increase in electric or garbage rates. There is a 9.4% increase in water/sewer rates, which will mean about $7.08 more each month for the typical Clayton household. Click to read more about the critical need for that increase in the Town Manager's budget message.

Town Leaders Stand with the Community Against Racism
In just one week, Clayton had shifted from one crippling crisis to another. And once again, in the face of crisis, the Clayton community came together. Our Mayor, Town Council, Police Chief, Fire Chief and all other Town leaders want Clayton to know...we stand with this community against racism and police brutality and we denounce those involved in the death of 46-year-old Minneapolis father George Floyd. Several peacful events were hosted in Downtown Clayton on Saturday, all aimed at bringing unity, all organized by Clayton youth. We can't say enough thanks to the organizers, who worked hand-in-hand with the Town and Clayton Police.

COVID-19 Business Resources
We’re battling an unprecedented public health emergency, the likes of which Clayton hasn’t seen in our 150-year history. Like the Town, businesses have been consumed by COVID-19, trying to adapt so our staff can safely continue to provide services, while also having to react and interpret daily changes in the complicated COVID-19 guidance. Our Town of Clayton Economic Development Office, in collaboration with our Planning, Engineering & Inspections, Fire and Police Department, continue to be a resource you can reach out to you if you have questions!
