Town Council Annual Retreat
Every year, Clayton Town leaders gather for an annual retreat to help set priorities and direction for town management and staff. At this retreat, a special focus will be given to crafting a vision for how Clayton should grow. Town staff are beginning the process of updating the Town's growth plan, Code of Ordinances and land-use map. Over the course of two days, the Mayor & Town Council will review how these tools can serve as a guide to shape a communiity's future. The retreat will take place Feb. 24-25 from 8:30-4:15 p.m. each day in the training room of the Clayton Police Department, just a block from Town Hall. The public is welcome to attend.

Clayton Wins Major Transportation Triumph
Town of Clayton leaders are celebrating what they call a huge transportation victory thanks to the tireless pursuit of support and funding by North Carolina House Representative Donna White. The NC Department of Transportation officially gave the green light to a major, multi-million dollar roadway project that will extend NC 42 East across US 70, bringing significant relief to local industry and helping alleviate growing traffic congestion in the Clayton area.

Construction on Greenway Extension Underway
Clayton is building a $3.5 million pedestrian tunnel and greenway extension into Downtown Clayton! Construction has closed Legend Park and will mean temporary shutdowns of O’Neil Street and the Sam’s Branch Trailhead and parking area - exact dates have not been determined, but the closure of O'Neil will likely be in the spring of 2020 and will mean drivers needing to detour down Covered Bridge and City Road. The greenway will connect to Legend Park, giving walkers, runners and bicyclists a safe and scenic trail into Downtown Clayton.

Council Approves Historic Budget
Town Council marked Clayton's historic transition from a small to medium-sized town with the 4-1 passage of the 2019 Fiscal Year Budget, which will leverage $70 million dollars of investments in streets, public safety, and parks and recreation over the next decade. The budget, which holds the Clayton tax rate at $0.58, coincides with the state-mandated Johnston County revaluation year, which brought up property values throughout the area and will result in higher annual tax bills. This budget is expected to impact the average Clayton resident by adding about $28.66 more a month in increased utility and Clayton property taxes.
