Twice a year, we adjust our clocks for Daylight Saving Time. This spring, clocks move forward one hour at 2 a.m., Sunday, March 8 - a change many people know as “springing forward.” Before heading to bed Saturday night, remember to set your clocks ahead one hour. While losing an hour of sleep can take a little getting used to, the shift brings longer evenings and more daylight after work and school.
The Clayton Fire Department encourages residents to treat the time change as a quick home safety check. When you change your clocks, take a few extra minutes to test the smoke alarms throughout your home. Replace batteries if needed, make sure alarms are less than 10 years old, and review your home fire escape plan with your family.
Working smoke alarms play an important role in keeping families safe. According to the National Fire Protection Association, homes with working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a fire by about half. The organization also recommends installing smoke alarms inside every bedroom, outside sleeping areas, and on every level of the home. Early warning gives everyone valuable time to get out safely.
