A New Chapter for Our Library

Hocutt-Ellington Memorial Library, a cornerstone of the Clayton community, is preparing for a major renovation that will modernize and enhance the space, ensuring the library continues to be a welcoming hub for learning, connection, and creativity.

The project, expected to be completed by summer 2026, will preserve the library’s historic charm while introducing new features that meet the evolving needs of our community.

Minimal Disruptions to Library Services

Although construction will take place over the next year, library services will continue:

  • Temporary Library Location – Library operations and a curated collection of materials will be available starting July 1, 2025, at the former Lipscomb’s Learning Center, located at 446 E Second St. in Clayton.
  • Hold & Pickup Services – Customers can still place books on hold for easy pickup
  • Programs & Events Continue – All programs, including Summer Reading, Storytime, and Craft Nights, will be hosted at various locations throughout the Town
  • Digital Resources Available – Patrons will still have 24/7 access to eBooks, eAudiobooks, and online learning tools

Renovation Project Tentative Timeline

  • March 7, 2025 - Project Launch
  • April 14, 2025 - Adult Room Closes
  • April 28, 2025 - All Programming Moves to The Clayton Center and Various Town Locations
  • May 5, 2025 - Building Closes to Public
  • May - June 2025 - No Access to Physical Items | Library Relocates to Temporary Site (Digital Collection Only)
  • July 1, 2025 - Temporary Site for Library Operations and Programming Opens
  • Summer 2026 - Renovated Library Reopens

Yes, the library is open to the public at 446 E Second St. in Clayton.

How do I return my books?

Materials can be returned at our temporary location. We also have an outdoor book return in front of the building.
