Planning a special event of your own?

A Special Events Permit is required to hold an event on any public property in the Town of Clayton. If you are interested in planning an event, please contact Emergency Management Coordinator Amy Shearin. The application is available here.

If you are interested in knowing how you can participate in any of Clayton Parks and Recreations special events, please contact our Marketing and Special Events Coordinator Lauren Lambert.


Many of our annual special events have been postponed due to COVID-19. As restrictions begin to ease, we hope to be able to announce dates for events to be held later in the year. Check back often and like us on Facebook and Instagram to get the latest information about upcoming special events.


Happening weekly in Downtown Clayton:

Clayton Farm and Community Market

Open every Saturday, April through October from 9 am to 1 pm, the Clayton Farm & Community Market sells everything from local fresh veggies and fruit to local honey, locally made soaps, crafts and much more. The market is located at Horne Square, 348 E. Main Street, at the corner of Main and S. Lombard Streets. There also are two Holiday Markets — one in November and the other in December, as well as Winter Markets from November through March. Easter Egg Hunt

The annual Easter Egg Hunt at Clayton Community Park is typically held on the morning of Good Friday each year. The Egg Hunt is for preschoolers (roughly age 5 and under) and begins promptly at 10:30 am. The Easter Bunny and Clayton Fire Department are on hand at 9:30 am to take pictures with the whole family! Plan to arrive early, parking is VERY limited.

Children ages 5 and under can join the Easter Bunny for a pancake breakfast, craft and a story. check back for the 2022 date!


Spring Special Needs Dance

Clayton Parks and Recreation hosts this themed dance for participants with special needs in middle school or older. You have to wear soft-soled shoes so we don't scuff up the gym floor at the Clayton Community Center, but that just makes it easier to dance! Great volunteers from Clayton Youth Council and other organizations help make this possible.


NC Senior Games

Are you 50 or older?  Do you know someone that is 50 or older? Get out for some fitness, fun and friendship! For more than three decades, the Johnston County Senior Games has been celebrating athletes in events ranging from the 100 meter dash to cornhole, from pickleball to basket-weaving. Clayton Road Race

The annual Clayton Road Race is typically held on the second Saturday in May on the streets of Downtown Clayton.

Please check back for 2022 date. This is a certified course by US Track & Field so timing chips and free T-shirts are provided!

Senior Recognition Day

Always the third Friday in May in the Council Chambers of The Clayton Center at 111 E. Second Street. Citizens ages 55 & up are invited to join us for a little fun and excitement as Clayton appreciates its Seniors! Clayton Parks & Recreation is proud to team up with Free food, music and entertainment for your enjoyment.

Square to Square Independence Day Street Festival

Join us on Main Street from Town Square to Horne Square for games, activities, contest, and so much more on July 3 from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m.! Activities will kick off at 11am with a bicycle parade on Main Street. Attendees can expect to see a variety of family-friendly attractions through out the day including a trackless train, rock climbing wall, water slides, hotdog eating contest, hula-hoop contest, food trucks, snow cones, watermelon, axe throwing, a poetry fox, a stilt walker, a face painter, a balloon twister, and two princesses. The festival will conclude with a Fire Truck Parade down Main Street at 2:45pm. This event is being held in lieu of the Town's firework celebration. Think you have what it takes to become a hotdog eating champion? Register here to be a part of our first ever contest of this kind, sponsored by The Hocutt-Ellington Library.


Boo Bash - Halloween Special Needs Dance

Friday, October 22nd 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at the Clayton Community Center! Our popular FREE Halloween dance for participants with special needs in middle school, high school and adults will take place OUTSIDE this year! Wear your favorite costume and come dance the night away!  Great volunteers from Clayton Youth Council and other organizations help make this possible.


Downtown Clayton Trick or Treat

Friday, October 29th from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. Trick or Treat in Downtown Clayton! This holiday tradition is designed for those with little legs to put on their costume and take over Main Street…marching down the street and sidewalks where they are greeted by local business owners waiting to hand them goodies and treats. Once you've filled up your bags, stop by Town Square for to snap a festive picture, and grab a Halloween craft to go! (corner of Main and Fayetteville Streets)!

Harvest Festival

Organized by the Clayton Chamber of Commercethis is by far, the biggest event in the Town of Clayton drawing an estimated 20,000+ people from all over the state to downtown for 5 days of music, vendors, food, rides, performances and so much more for the entire family. The Clayton Chamber of Commerce is planning the fall festival for October 27 - 31, 2021. For more information visit claytonharvestfestival.com

Christmas Parade

Saturday, December 11th at 3:00 p.m. There’s just something about a small town Christmas Parade! Sponsored and organized by the Clayton Rotary, the event features more than 100 colorful floats, booming marching bands and of course, Santa Claus! Visit ClaytonChristmasParade.org
