The Clayton Library receives generous donations of books throughout the year. Many of those books go into our collection and many go up for sale in the biannual Friends of the Library book fundraiser. We are not currently accepting any more donations – you all have been so generous that we've run out of room to store them until after the sale!

Organized in 1976, the nonprofit Friends of the Library Inc. originally existed to raise money to build Hocutt-Ellington Memorial Library. Since that dream was realized in 1981, the nonprofit has continued to support the library by raising money through more than two decades of book sales. The Library then makes requests to the group for funds to make improvements to the Library.

In the past year, the Friends of the Library have supported the library with:

•   $6,700 to purchase bookshelves for a newly-renovated and re-imagined children's room

•   $2,350 to help supply the library's popular summer reading programs

•   $500 to help purchase a new desk for the online catalog

•   $500 of food and supplies for the 2018 teen Rock the Block

•  About $700 to purchase three sets of books for the Juvenile Book Club

In years past, the Friends have provided $3,750 of computer furniture; $2,600 of computers and headphones for the children's room; $3,110 of children's computer workstations; and a $13,100 microfilm reader for the library's history room.

The Friends of the Library have enjoyed watching Hocutt-Ellington Memorial Library grow over the years,Friends fo the Library member Bonnie Johnson said.
"My husband and I have lived in Clayton more than 50 years," she said. "One of the great things about our town is the community support for our library. When I first visited the library after moving here in 1965, it was located in very small room in the town hall.  Today we have a beautiful library building of our own.  Our unique Town library has something to offer everyone, no matter how old or young you are."
Johnson says the Friends of the Library group is always looking to have more people join. They'll have a membership sign-up table at the book sales or you can stop by the library any time to pick up a membership form. The Friends meet on Tuesday mornings to sort the books that so many have donated for their book sales. They want to thank everyone for their generous commitment to the Clayton Library and hope to see all ages at the Spring Book Sale!

The Friends of the Library, Inc holds general meetings at 4 p.m. on the 4th Thursday of January, July and October. All are welcome!

The Friends of the Library will be back in April for the annual Spring Book Sale!
