Clayton Police Earn Top Professional Recognition

The Clayton Police Department has received advanced reaccreditation by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) on November 17, 2012 at the commission conference in Jacksonville, Florida. The award means that the Clayton Police Department will continue to be an internationally accredited law enforcement agency for the next three years. Accreditation is a highly prized recognition of law enforcement professional excellence that was first awarded to the department in 2009.

Verification by a team of out-of-state assessors that the Clayton Police Department meets the Commission’s state-of-the-art standards is part of a voluntary process that occurred in early August of this year. The assessors visited Clayton, reviewed documents and interviewed employees and town residents before reporting their findings to the Commission for a full review and vote by the Commission. The Clayton Police Department has to comply with 375 applicable standards of professionalism in order to maintain accredited status. Accredited agencies must submit annual reports to CALEA attesting continued compliance with those standards under which it was initially accredited.

The Clayton Police Department is one of only five municipal agencies in the State with fewer than 50 personnel to achieve advanced law enforcement accreditation, and the first agency ever in Johnston County. A total of 41 agencies in North Carolina hold accredited status, including 8 state agencies and 5 sheriff’s departments. CALEA accreditation is an international honor, with over 700 agencies in 4 countries having earned the award.

The CALEA certification for Clayton PD may also be viewed as a cost-savings measure. The Town’s insurance provider imparts up to a 20% insurance premium credit on law enforcement liability coverage for maintaining CALEA accreditation. The annual cost savings exceeds the expenses relative to the three-year CALEA reaccreditation fees.
