NOTIFICATION OF WASTEWATER RELEASE IN JOHNSTON COUNTY

General Statute 143-215.1C requires that the owner or operator of any wastewater collection or treatment works to issue a press release when an untreated wastewater discharge of 1,000 gallons or more reaches surface waters.

In accordance with that regulation, the following news release has been prepared and issued to media in the affected county:

On June 6, 2019, the Town of Clayton had a discharge of untreated wastewater caused by a contractor installing a new gravity sewer line. A force main was damaged while digging. Approximately 28,285 gallons of untreated wastewater was released from the damaged pipe. The untreated wastewater entered Sam’s Branch Creek near 955 Randolph Drive. It was immediately reported to town staff who initiated an emergency response. The damage was repaired and the affected area was cleaned and restored.

The Division of Water Resources was notified of the events on June 6, 2019 and is reviewing the matter. For more information contact the Town of Clayton Distribution & Collection System Manager, Byron W. Poelman at 919-553-1530.
