Utility Work on Main Street Moves into Second Day - Closure Continues into Wed. Nov. 28

Contract crews met some difficult underground conditions Tuesday and utility work on Main Street will now have to continue again Wednesday, Nov. 28th. Crews will get to work at 8 a.m. to try to complete the work as quickly as possible and then repave over the deep hole that had to be dug to access the aging downtown utility lines. We apologize for the inconvenience caused by a second day of Main Street closures.

Town crews will be working diligently to cause the least interruption to businesses affected between Lombard and Smith streets and will work again to allow local traffic and customers to access this block. Due to the depth of the utility lines, the work is being done by a contractor. Crews try to schedule work after hours, but this job would be more difficult and costly to complete at night. A one block detour will be in place for thru traffic from Lombard to Smith streets , however, Town staff will be allowing traffic headed for businesses on that block to drive down Main Street.

A one block detour will be in place for thru traffic from Lombard Street to Smith Street - HOWEVER, Town staff will be allowing traffic headed for businesses on that block to drive down Main Street! Just let the person stationed at the blockage at Lombard know you're headed for Manning's Restaurant, Jones Cafe, Rejoyce Gifts, Medlin Office Supply, Olde Town Supply, Inc., Chefella's Cafe & Event Planning, Craze Boutique, Kirby's Precision Cuts, First Federal Bank, JEWELRY DESIGN STUDIO, Kristoff Law Offices, Lewis Brothers Tire & Alignment, Main St. Community Garden, Michael’s Auto Service Centers, Inc., Wine on Main, or Clayton School of Creative Arts and they'll wave you through.

The actual sewer repair which will block both lanes of travel is at 446 E. Main Street, Dalton Engineering & Assc. Main Street will be completely blocked in front of that location in both directions. Barricades will be placed in the intersection of Main & Smith since traffic will need to turn onto 2nd Street to detour one block around this utility work.

At Lombard, a manned barricade will be stopping any thru traffic headed toward US 70, but again, drivers heading to local businesses like Jones Café, etc. will be allowed to proceed to those businesses. Again, a Town of Clayton utility worker will be stationed at the barricade to allow local traffic to drive down up until the sewer work is occurring at Dalton Engineering. The Town realizes the inconvenience of this closure, especially coming on the heels of Main Street closures for Halloween and the Harvest Festival. Please be patient as we try to safely complete this work and direct traffic to ensure the public can access these Downtown Clayton, NC businesses!
