Notification of March 19 Wastewater Release in Johnston County


Town of Clayton had a discharge of untreated wastewater on March 19 caused by rags, rocks and debris in the sewer line. Approximately 1,400 gallons of untreated wastewater was released from a manhole near Amelia Church Rd behind 11351 US Hwy 70 Business W. The untreated wastewater entered a storm drain leading to the Little Creek.

The Division of Water Resources was notified of the events on March 19, 2021 and is reviewing the matter.

General Statute 143-215.1C requires that the owner or operator of any wastewater collection or treatment works to issue a press release when an untreated wastewater discharge of 1,000 gallons or more reaches surface waters.

In accordance with that regulation, this news release was prepared and issued to media in Johnston County.
