Welcome the Town of Clayton, North Carolina

Any individual who sells or peddles products door-to-door within the Town of Clayton must obtain a $50 permit from the Clayton Police Department. In order to obtain a permit, individuals must provide valid IDs and undergo a criminal background check.

The 30-day permit will not be issued to anyone any felony convictions, sex offenses, drug or fraud charges against them in the last 10 years. After the initial 30-day period, the permit must be renewed for a $25 fee

The picture to the right shows the official ID issued by the Town of Clayton Police Department. Any authorized individual soliciting door-to-door should produce this ID upon request. Please note that exceptions exempt individuals operating for educational, religious, charitable or non-profit purposes

According to Town of Clayton ordinance, NO ONE can solicit at homes before 9:00am or after 8:00pm.

If someone knocks on your door selling a product or service, you can request to see their identification badge and permit issued by the Clayton Police Department. If the individual refuses to show the badge or if they become aggressive, threatening or intimidating, close your door and call 911. Keep any printed info the salesperson may have given you, and write down a description of the person, their vehicle, or the direction they were headed when they left your premises.
