Welcome the Town of Clayton, North Carolina

The Clayton Police Department's Patrol Division is responsible for the prevention and suppression of crime. This division consists of sworn officers who answer calls for service through the Johnston County Emergency Center (911). They also conduct self-initiated activity.

These officers are on four different patrol squads. Each squad consists of five officers, one master officer, and one sergeant. Two of the squads are supervised by a lieutenant, who also serves as the watch commander.

The Patrol Division also is home to two specialty units — a K9 Unit and Bicycle Patrol Unit. These squads address issues outside the more traditional role of law enforcement and handle special needs as assigned.

The responsibilities of the Patrol Division include:

  • Preservation of public peace, protection of life and property, and crime prevention.
  • Preliminary investigation of all crimes.
  • Continuing criminal investigations in other specified crimes.
  • Enforcement of laws and investigation of incidents relating to vehicular and pedestrian traffic, including motor vehicle collision investigation and traffic enforcement activities.
  • Implementation and maintenance of Community Oriented Problem Solving strategies designed to improve the quality of life for the citizens of Clayton.
  • Development and implementation of a target-hardening approach to crime prevention, conduct public programs, residential and commercial security surveys, serve as liaison with other crime prevention oriented businesses (alarms, security and insurance) and follow-up inspections of crime locations.

The Patrol Division also is home to two specialty units — a Bicycle Patrol Unit and a K-9 Unit. These squads address issues outside the more traditional role of law enforcement and handle special needs as assigned.

K9 Unit

The CPD K9 Unit is a team of four highly trained handlers and their K9 partners.

Our K9 officers patrol Clayton in specially marked police vehicles. Along with their general patrol duties, our K-9 teams are trained to provide building searches; evidence and suspect searches; suspect tracking; and narcotics detection. The K-9 Officers also serve a community education and outreach role by making public appearances with community groups.

Bicycle Patrol Unit

The Bicycle Patrol Unit is able to field a number of officers trained and equipped for bicycle patrol on specialized bikes with Police markings and equipment. Each of these officers has a primary job responsibility separate from bicycle patrol. The officers are deployed as needed to address problems that seem amenable to bicycle patrol. Bicycle patrols are faster than foot patrols, less obtrusive than motorized patrols, can go places motorized patrols cannot, and provide greater face-to-face interaction with the community.
