Welcome the Town of Clayton, North Carolina

We're updating the Growth Plan that shapes Clayton's future.
We need YOUR help!

Here's how you can participate.

  • Watch the Virtual Workshop video presentation from December. The video is posted on YouTube at https://youtu.be/t7CgtVxG6Hk
  • Complete the Mapping Activity that was made available at the public meeting on November 10. This activity will allow us to document your comments and priorities in Clayton and its ETJ. Place the different colored dots on the map to let us know what you would Keep, Toss, or Create in Clayton. Just zoom in on the map, drop your dot, and leave a comment! Our events, parks, proximity to Raleigh, schools, greenways and our small town charm...Clayton is, well, kind of awesome!  It must be...our population increased 131% from 2000 to 2010.  But if we don't plan for future growth, we risk missing opportunities AND we risk losing all that we love about Clayton. According to capital-area planners - the Town could DOUBLE in size in the next 30 years!  In 2014-2015, Town Planners worked hard to craft your ideas into action and Town Council approved a comprehensive Growth Plan that helps guide us into the future.

But now it's time to update that Growth Plan. Clayton has grown by 35% in the last five years - that means more than 6,000 have moved here since 2014, according to the U.S. Census estimates. So we NEED YOUR HELP to once again update that plan following that growth.

What steps can the Town take to ensure quality development?  How will growth impact the region’s resources?  Can the existing systems of infrastructure support additional people, housing, jobs, school children and cars?  These are all important questions that have been considered in the Comprehensive Plan.

A Growth Plan sets goals and makes recommendations for addressing growth in Clayton and making our town a vibrant, unique community with a system of open spaces, affordable housing, and a thriving downtown, among other aspirations.

In July of 2020, we're kicking off a large public outreach effort. The process to update this plan will take ALL of us contributing and will take time - we expect the updated Clayton Growth Plan to be completed in 2021. We'll be holding community meetings, conducting community surveys to gather feedback from residents, and posting updates here on this webpage ClaytonNC.org/growth. Together, we can preserve what we love about town and enhance the quality of life experienced by existing and future residents. Questions? Contact the Planning Department at 919-553-5002.
