National Endowment for The Arts Big Read

Grant Announcement

The Hocutt-Ellington Memorial Library is one of 61 organizations nationwide selected to receive a 2021-2022 NEA Big Read grant. A grant of $12,398 will support a community reading program focusing on The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros from September 2021-May 2022. An initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest, the NEA Big Read broadens our understanding of our world, our communities, and ourselves through the joy of sharing a good book.

Books & Programs

The Clayton Library chose The House on Mango Street and companion titles How Tia Lola Came to Visit Stay and Hairs/Pelitos to celebrate the diversity of our population in Clayton and to start a town-wide conversation about what it means to be a neighbor, how we can live with neighbors who are from different backgrounds from us, and so that we can make a concentrated effort to celebrate everyone who calls Clayton home.

With this grant, the library will be hosting tons of events from September 2021-May 2022, including numerous book clubs in the schools and in the public, hosting free art classes with instructors from Clayton Visual Arts, free theater workshops with Carolina Youth Theatre, a panel discussion with the Clayton Racial Equality Coalition, live Zoom meetings with authors Sandra Cisneros and Julia Alvarez, a first-time homebuyers workshop, writing workshops, and a curated art show that will include LIVE monologues from Carolina Youth Theatre actors. We will do everything to make these programs safe and fun!

Launch Event

The NEA Big Read: Clayton will launch on Saturday, September 18 at the Clayton Farm and Community Market on Horne Square in downtown Clayton, NC. Library staff and volunteers will be there from 9am-1pm to pass out free copies of The House on Mango Street and our companion titles for children! The Clayton Farm & Community Market will have a special food truck with delicious Mexican food, and we'll have a fun way for you to walk-and-read around downtown. We'll see you there!
