Town of Clayton Public Art Advisory Board
Sculpture Trail Call to Artists

Deadline for Submission, Monday, May 14, 2018

The Town of Clayton Public Art Advisory Board invites artists to apply to participate in its annual Clayton Sculpture Trail public art exhibition. The 2018-19 Town of Clayton Sculpture Trail is a temporary outdoor exhibit to be displayed at numerous prominent sites from June 2018 to May/June 2019.

This call to artists provides an opportunity for artists to submit completed artwork for consideration. A selection panel will choose a number of original sculptures to be displayed in public- and/or privately-owned locations throughout Town. Artists retain ownership of their work and agree to lend it to the exhibition.

Selected artists will receive a $1,000 honorarium for lending their work for the twelve-month period. In addition, the board will determine the mechanism to select a “People’s Choice” winner with an award of $1,000.

  • There is no application fee
  • The Town of Clayton may purchase an entry at the conclusion of the exhibition for permanent placement
    • The $1,000 honorarium will be credited against the purchase price for the artwork selected
    • If the artist also wins the People's Choice award, that $1,000 award will also be credited against the purchase price for the artwork selected
  • The Town of Clayton reserves the right to photograph and reproduce images of the artwork on exhibition for promotional and educational purposes

Location of Artwork

Downtown Clayton is a North Carolina Main Street® community and a destination where people, businesses and the arts thrive. Founded in 1869, long-time and new residents alike are rediscovering many of the historical and architecturally significant buildings and neighborhoods that add charm and character to downtown.

Festivals and special events such as Town Square Concert Series, Mondo Roots Cultural Arts & Music Festival (formerly Millstock Art & Music Festival), The Shindig, Clayton Harvest & Music Festival, Halloween Parade, Christmas Tree Lighting and more draw visitors and residents by the thousands to Downtown Clayton.

Downtown Clayton is accessible by I-40 and I-95. It’s just twenty minutes from Downtown Raleigh, the state capital, and about a thirty-minute drive from Raleigh-Durham International Airport.

Sites for the sculpture trail include Town Square, Horne Square, The Clayton Center, Hocutt-Ellington Memorial Library, and many other popular and well-traveled locations in Downtown Clayton and beyond. The Town reserves the right to designate the exhibition location of the selected artwork.

Artists are responsible for all costs, equipment and labor necessary for the delivery, installation and removal of their work and assume all risk and damage to their work before and during installation and during and after removal.

The sculptures will be insured by the Town of Clayton up to the purchase value of the sculpture after installation while on exhibition. A level, 4-by-4 concrete pad will be provided for securing the sculptures. Any work not appropriate for installation onto a concrete base will be addressed on a case-by-case basis with the artist. The artists will install the work under the supervision of Town personnel. Lighting and power may be provided at some of the locations. The Artist shall affix his or her art work to the concrete pad with locking bolts to prevent tampering or removal of the art work by unauthorized parties.

Each selected piece of artwork will have a pre-determined sales price, up to a maximum of $12,500. The Town of Clayton may purchase one or more of the exhibited artworks for placement at permanent locations throughout the Town. If so chosen, the artists agree to sell the artwork to the Town for the pre-determined purchase price. The $1,000 stipend provided to the artists will be credited against the purchase price for those artworks selected, as will be the $1,000 prize if the piece won the People's Choice award.
