Turkington Plant on US 70 Ready to Expand
The Clayton Town Council has given its approval to an expansion of the Turkington plant on US 70.
The first phase of construction includes a huge warehouse to be built by the Walthom Group that will be used by the multi-national company.
Other phases of development will probably include office space and industrial buildings, but, though adjacent to the Turkington site, they may not be used by Turkington. The project had a green light from the Planning Board.
The expansion is part of the company's relocation of its North American operations to Clayton. Turkington moved into a vacant industrial building on US 70 Business recently and wants to add more space.
The multi-national company, which manufactures equipment for the baking industry, had been operating in nearby Goldsboro for nearly three decades, but had to move out of their facilities there when their lease expired. More than 100 of the company's employees are commuting to Clayton, and an additional 35 or so are expected to be added when full operations begin.
The company's major North American customers include Pepperidge Farm, Flowers, Sara Lee and Interstate Bakeries.
