Surplus Items Listed on On-line Auction Site

Need a used car at a good price? How about a used Ditch Witch or a metal deck trailer? Or maybe a used phone or portable radio?

Those are just some of the surplus items that the town is selling at auction on the GovDeals website. And there's a lot more, like laser printers, scanners and a camera. The list of items that have outlived their usefulness, or simply aren't used anymore by town employees, is long.

"It's really a cost-effective way of moving out surplus items," said Finance Director Robert McKie. "With today's technology, we can reach a much larger bidder base by having an on-line auction rather than the old-style auctions of the past. This method has become the standard."

The town uses GovDeals, an auction site for governmental organizations that operates much like popular auction sites such as ebay.com. Anyone can make a bid and buy items at any time of the day or night.

To make a bid on the site, simply go to the town's website-- www.townofclaytonnc.org --and click on "Surplus Auction at GovDeals," which is located under ONLINE SERVICES.

Not all items for sale have been listed yet, so McKie suggests checking out the site over the next few weeks as items are added.
