Police Investigate Water Meter Cover Thefts

The Clayton Police Department is asking residents to be on the lookout for thieves who are stealing water meter covers in various locations around town.

More than 50 have been discovered missing already.

"The stolen meters are likely being sold for recycling purposes for far less than the $20 each that the Town will pay to replace them," Chief Glen Allen said in a report on the case. " The public is asked to be on the lookout for and report any suspicious activity that may be related to these thefts."

Areas hit the hardest are along Stallings Street and in the Lionsgate and Riverwood subdivisions--many from vacant residences, the Chief said.

Residents are being asked to give the Department a call at 919-553-4611 to report any suspicious activity.

Customer Service Director Ann Game said the town is replacing the missing covers "as soon as possible after we discover them missing."
