Pottery Classes Beginning This Summer

The Parks & Recreation Department has a series of pottery classes for both children and adults beginning this summer at the Clayton Community Center on Amelia Church Road.

The classes are open to both residents and non-residents, and Community Center membership discounts apply. Registration is being handled at the Community Center.

Here's a look at what's being offered:

BEGINNING HANDBUILDING BASICS (June 14)
An introductory six week class in hand building designed for everyone.  Learn to make tiles, trays, vases, mirrors, boxes, and more using the slab roller and your hands. Students will  explore several surface decorating techniques using simple tools, found objects and glazes. A 10-visit studio card is included. Tuesdays - 10:00am-1:00pm; June 14-July26; Ages 18 & up; $70/resident/six week class, $85/non-resident/six week class, $15 additional fee for clay

KIDS IN CLAY (July 8)
Children, ages 5-8, will learn basic handbuilding techniques like pinch pots, coils and slab projects. They will create fun and functional items that they will glaze, take home and use. An emphasis on creative expression will be encouraged. Fridays - 4:00-5:15pm; July 8-August 12; Ages 5-8; $40/resident/six week class, $55/non-resident/six week class; Instructor - Lynn Kurisko

CERAMIC BEADS, PENDANTS & MORE WORKSHOP (July 16)
This four week session will explore the endless possibilities of ceramic bead design. If you can roll clay into a ball , then you have the basic skills to begin making ceramic beads! Further lessons include shaping, texturing, stamping, cutting, carving, molding, decorating and glazing to create your very own unique beads, focal beads, pendants even bracelets! Clay, glazes and firings are included. Finished beads will be ready by week 4 and assembly techniques will be introduced Ages 16 & up; Saturday (July 16-30); 2:00-5:00pm; $40/resident/three week class, $55/non-resident/three week class; Instructor - Julie Rowe

POTTERY OPEN STUDIO
Open Studio is available to approved potters and enrolled students in our pottery program. A punch card can be purchased at front desk for $30/resident and $45/non-resident good for ten visits to the studio on Thursdays 10:00am-1:00pm and Tuesdays 5:30-8:30pm.  Some tools are available for use.  Clay must be purchased from the Parks & Recreation Department for an additional $25/25lb. bag
