Links to Community Center in the Works

A pedestrian walkway that would connect the downtown area, Clayton High School, Cooper Elementary School and several residential neighborhoods with the Clayton Community Center is in the planning stages.

The walkway would make use of existing sidewalks and greenways as much as possible.

"Providing everyone easy access to the Community Center has been a goal since it opened two years ago," said Mayor Jody McLeod. "This walkway will be a major step in that direction."

Town officials are in the process of hiring an engineering firm to help with route planning, cost estimates and construction plans. Planners must also coordinate with the NC Department of Transportation, since any route would require crossing streets and highways.

The project was made possible when the Town acquired a planning grant for this purpose and will hopefully be part of a multi phase, grant funded project for future construction.
