New Fitness and Arts Classes Beginning Soon
The Parks & Recreation Department has several new fitness and arts classes starting up this winter at the Clayton Center and the Clayton Community Center.
The classes are open to both residents and non-residents, and Community Center membership discounts apply.

SENIOR COMPUTER CLASSES

"NO SCHOOL TODAY"
The Clayton Parks & Recreation Department will be offering a "No School Today" program for elementary school children on Teacher Workdays during the school year at the Clayton Community Center (715 Amelia Church Road). Each child will need to bring a lunch, snacks and drinks for the day and will enjoy a wide variety of games and activities including sports and arts and crafts. Dates: 3/ 30; 7:30am - 5:30pm; $10/After School Participant/date, $25/resident/child/date, $40/non-resident/child/date. Space is limited so register as soon as possible.
TAI CHI CHAUN
Learn the ancient Ba Shi Ba, Tai Chi Gung for health, longevity, balance and flexibility. The low impact nature of Tai Chi makes it an ideal exercise for seniors. New participants can register at the beginning of each month for class. Tuesdays & Thursdays - 10:00-11:00am or 7:00-8:00pm; Ages 16+; $30/resident/month, $45/non-resident/month; Instructor - Michael Liaudatis; The Clayton Center Room 300 (111 E. Second Street)
TAEKWON-DO
This program focuses on self-confidence, discipline, and physical fitness. The instructors are International Taekwondo Federation certified black belts and will teach International Taekwondo Federation techniques and forms. Regulation uniforms are not mandatory but may be purchased from the instructor or participants may provide their own. Testing to advance in belt rank is done by the instructors for an additional fee. Tuesdays - 5:30-7:00pm, Thursdays – 7:00-8:45pm, and Saturday – 10:00am-12:30pm; Ages 7 & up; $30/resident/month, $45/non-resident/month; Instructors – Charles Farrell, Joey Reeder, Sr. & Joey Reeder, Jr.
TEXTURES IN HANDBUILDING II
Wednesdays (February 1-March 21) - 2:00pm-5:00pm;; Ages 18 & up; $85/resident/eight week class, $100/non-resident/eight week class, $15 additional fee for clay; Instructor - Timothy Cherry
POTTERY SAMPLER FOR TWEENS
This class is designed for the tween age group who want to learn about the various ways to create with clay. This eight week session will explore hand-building techniques, decorating and glazing, and an introduction to wheel for those who have always want to try it. Students will be able to continue on with the wheel or explore additional hand-building ideas. Mondays (February 20-April 9) or Tuesdays (February 21-April 10) - 4:30-6:00pm; Ages 9-12; $65/resident/eight week class, $80/non-resident/eight week class; Instructor - Lynn Kurisko
TEEN WHEEL
A pottery class designed specifically for 13-17 year olds looking for something exciting to do after school or during the summer! In this six week course they will learn the skills it takes to create functional bowls, cups and plates on the potter's wheel. Be prepared to get dirty (all washable) and have fun on the wheel. Final class will be devoted to glazing your work for durable, food safe use! Stop by the studio prior to registration if you'd like to take a look at the studio and see what other beginners have accomplished! All supplies are provided. POTTERY OPEN STUDIO
Open Studio is available to approved potters and enrolled students in our pottery program. A punch card can be purchased at front desk for $30/resident and $45/non-resident good for ten visits to the studio on Thursdays 10:00am-1:00pm and Tuesdays 5:30-8:30pm. Some tools are available for use. Clay must be purchased from the Parks & Recreation Department for an additional $25/25lb. bag
INTERMEDIATE CROCHET
If you already know the basics of crochet and want to go further this course is for you. This course is for the advanced beginner through intermediate. Time will be given for a short review of the crochet basics, as taught in the Beginning Crochet class, and then new stitches will be introduced by making smaller items such as coasters or bookmarks. Once you've mastered the crochet techniques presented, you move on to the larger, main item. Topics covered are patterns such as basic ripples, shell and puff stitches, increases, decreases, gauge and edgings. Supplies included. PRINTMAKING FOR TWEENS: TURNING DRAWINGS INTO PRINTS
Student will explore exciting drawing techniques such as contour, gesture and positive / negative space. Using pencils, & sharpies finished drawings will be turned into a set of original prints. Students will learn how to print using hand printing techniques and press printing. DRAW ON - AFTER SCHOOL ART
Each exciting week provides a new experience. We will visit different ancient cultures throughout the world using the eyes of an artist. Some of the places we will visit are Africa, Egypt, Mexico, and China. I look forward to exploring with you the world of art. This hour and a half class is designed for elementary school children. COPPER ENAMELING
Experience the thrill of copper enameling while creating jewelry or copper accessories for home or garden. Investigate the enameling process from preparing the copper through applying enamel colorants to quick kiln firing. SENIOR BINGO
If you are 55 and over, come join us for our monthly Bingo. The Recreation Department sponsors Bingo every third Monday at Heritage Court Apartments at 11am and every third Friday at the Clayton Senior Center at 10am Prizes are awarded to the winners.
SENIOR PILATES
Pilate’s classic mat exercises focus on strengthening the abdominal core, improving posture and lengthening for better flexibility and helps relieve stress. This is a non-impact workout for everyone regardless of age or abilities. Modifications will be given for inflexible people. SENIOR CHAIR PILATES
