Many Classes Available Through Parks & Rec
New classes of all types will be beginning soon at the newly-opened Clayton Community Center at 715 Amelia Church Road.
Many others are ongoing.
Some of the classes, which are open to both residents and non-residents, have new instructors and all are limited in size. Please register at the Parks & Recreation Department office at the Community Center.
Here's a rundown of the classes:
EXTRUDER WORKSHOP
Learn to use this handy tool to make a variety of pottery creations from simple to complex. The extruder pushes the clay through a die to create a solid or hollow shape. From these extrusions you can make open or closed pieces that are decorative or functional. Surface decoration and glazing will also be covered in this two day workshop. Instructor: Susan Luster; Fee: $45/resident/two day workshop, $55/non-resident/two day workshop; Ages: 16 & up; Date/Time: Saturday August 7 & 14; 10:00am-3:00pm.
PRESCHOOL ART CLASS
This class is designed for young preschoolers with a parent or caretaker. Each class will focus on a particular topic with a project to take home. Emphasis will be on fun while exploring color, texture, and our natural environment. For example, for a fall leaves class, we will take a walk, talk about fall colors, and do a painting incorporating the natural things we gather. All supplies will be provided. Dress for the mess. Registration fee covers one child and one adult. Instructor: Lisa Bailey; Fee: $30/resident/four week session and $40/non-resident/four week session; Ages: 3-5 + adult; Date/Time: Thursday 10:00-11:00am beginning September 16.
ADULT BASIC DRAWING
Learn the fundamentals of composition, form, perspective, and light through quick sketches and more detailed work. No drawing experience necessary. Come develop your skills while expressing yourself! Instructor: Lynda Wilson; Fee: $65/resident/six week session and $75/non-resident/six week session; Date/Time: Monday 10:00am-12noon beginning September 13.
CALLIGRAPHY
The Clayton Parks & Recreation Department will be offering Calligraphy classes on Tuesday from 6:00-8:00pm for six weeks beginning July 13 at The Clayton Center (111 E. Second Street). Fees $35/resident and $45/non-resident. Classes will be conducted by John McFadden. Master the art of distinctive hand lettering. Projects will include Old English, Italic, Script, and Uncial. Express yourself making invitations, greeting cards, announcements, and award certificates, etc.
JEWELRY SILVERSMITHING
Learn jewelry fabrication using a torch. Projects will include basic design, soldering, sawing, filing, drilling, stone setting, forms and polishing. Also an introduction to copper enameling. Tools provided. Class will be held on Thursday evenings beginning September 9 from 6:30-8:45pm for eight weeks at The Clayton Center (111 E. Second Street). The cost is $65/resident and $75/non-resident. The instructor is John McFadden.
ZUMBA
The Zumba® program fuses hypnotic Latin rhythms and easy-to-follow moves to create a one-of-a-kind fitness program that will blow you away. Instructor: Kathryn Dolin; Fee: $20/resident/month and $30/non-resident/month; Ages: 18 & up; Date/Time: Tuesdays 9:30-10:20am or Thursdays 6:00-6:50pm; the fee to take both Tuesday morning and Thursday evenings is $30/resident/month and $40/non-resident/month.
CARDIO SCULPT
An exercise class that will burn the calories, alternating between heart thumping aerobic moves and resistance moves to build strength. Instructor: Donna Granger; Fee: $20/resident/month and $30/non-resident/month; Ages: 18 & up; Date/Time: Wednesdays 7:00-8:00pm.
TAE KWON DO CLASS
The Clayton Parks and Recreation Department is offering Tae Kwon Do classes at the Clayton Community Center on Tuesdays (5:30-7:00pm) and Saturdays (12:45-2:00pm) for ages 7-12 and Tuesdays (5:30-7:00pm) and Saturdays (11:30am-12:45pm) for ages 13 & up and Thursdays (7:00-8:30pm) and Saturdays (10:00-11:30am) for blue and black belts. The fee is $30/month for residents and $40/month for non-residents (A resident is classified as anyone living within the Clayton town limits. A Clayton address does not necessarily classify you as a resident). Alternating instructors: Joey Reeder, Charles Farrell and Ken Farrell. New students can register ten minutes before class at the beginning of each month.
TAI CHI CLASSES
Tai Chi Classes are being offered on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 10:00-11:00am or Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7:00-8:00pm at The Clayton Center, third floor. The fee is $30/month/resident and $40/month/non-resident. New participants can register ten minutes before class at the beginning of each month.
QUICKSTART TENNIS
The Parks & Recreation Department is offering QuickStart Tennis classes on Tuesdays from 6:00-6:45pm for ages 5-7 and from 7:00-7:45pm for ages 8-10 at Clayton Community Park. The cost for each eight week session is $45/residents and $55/non-residents. Class size is limited. The instructors are Armani and Cliff Joyner. Start dates are June 8 and August 10.
TENNIS CLASSES
The Parks & Recreation Department is offering Tennis classes on Wednesdays at 6:00pm for ages 11-15 and 7:00pm for ages 16 & up at Clayton Community Park. The cost for each four week session is $35/residents and $45/non-residents. Class size is limited. The instructors are Armani and Cliff Joyner. Start dates are June 16, July 14, August 18, and September 22.
ADULT SINGLES TENNIS LADDER
Adult Singles Tennis Ladders offer a great opportunity to meet and enjoy friendly competition with players of similar ability where good sportsmanship is encouraged and expected. There are two divisions, 3.0-4.0 and 4.5 -up for both men and women. Players arrange their own match times and location and must be over 18 as of 6/18/09. The fee is $5/resident and $15/non-resident. Register at the Parks & Recreation office (340 McCullers Street) or call 553-1550 for additional information.
SENIOR BINGO
If you are 55 and over, come join us for our monthly Bingo. The Recreation Department sponsors Bingo every third Monday at Heritage Court Apartments at 11am and every third Friday at the Clayton Senior Center at 10am Prizes are awarded to the winners.
MAT PILATES FOR SENIORS
Pilate’s classic mat exercises focus on strengthening the abdominal core, improving posture and lengthening for better flexibility and helps relieve stress. This is a non-impact workout for everyone regardless of age or abilities. Modifications will be given for inflexible people. Class is held at the Clayton Senior Center (303 Dairy Road) from 10:00-10:45am. The instructor is Donna Granger.
SENIOR CHAIR PILATES
Lo aerobic and toning work geared toward the individual that has limited movement, but wants to stay active at the same time. Class is held at the Clayton Senior Center (303 Dairy Road) from 11:00-11:30am. The instructor is Donna Granger.
