Girls Scouts Get Q & A Session With Mayor

Members of the newly-formed Daisy Girl Scout Troop 1086 got the thrill of their young lives recently when Mayor Jody McLeod joined them for a question-and-answer session about local government.

The eight-member troop was preparing to lead the Pledge of Allegiance at a Town Council meeting when the Mayor surprised them with a visit.

"What's on your mind," he asked the youngsters.

Most of the questions centered on what a Mayor and Town Council does, but it was a good start toward one of their longterm goals--community involvement.

"We're getting them prepared for community involvement, community service," said Troop Leader Lori Abrams.

The Troop also asked the Mayor to declare March 7-13 "Girl Scout Week" in Clayton, which the Council promptly did.

Abrams helped form the new Troop back in December, just in time to take them caroling as their first official action. They also just completed their first effort at selling Girl Scout Cookies.

She said the girls will focus much of their community service effort on promoting recycling "and keeping the planet green."
