Fire Fighters Association Annual BBQ Oct. 15
The Clayton Fire Fighters Association annual BBQ chicken fundraiser is coming up Friday, Oct. 15, and organizers are expecting to sell more than 1,200 plates in support of worthy causes and to help the Fire Department add some equipment.
Both dine-in and take-out are available from 11 am to 7 pm at Fire Station #1 on West Horne Street.
"We believe in doing what we can to help those who need it," said Association Treasurer Larry Such. "We've helped many organizations and individuals in the past through this fundraiser, and we're grateful for all the support the community has given us."
This year, some of the funds will probably go to help the Department restore old Fire Engine No. 1.
Plates are $7 each and include half a chicken, green beans, boiled potatoes and rolls. The Ladies Auxiliary is providing desserts.
In previous years, the Association has made donations to the NC Fallen Firefighters Foundation, the Red Cross, the Jaycee Burn Center, local churches and to individuals in need. Some funds have also been used to supplement the Department's yearly budget when needed.
Fire Engine No. 1, a 1947 fire truck that's been relegated to appearing in parades, is an important part of the town's history, Chief Lee Barbee said.
"That truck has never left Clayton, all these years," the Chief said. "It still runs, though it needs some attention. A little work and this will be a good truck again."
The truck is part of an effort by the Chief to preserve some of the town's history.
