Town Joins County Emergency Warning System

For the past several years the Town of Clayton has subscribed to the CodeRed telephone call based emergency and event notification system. The system is used for everything from notice of utility service interruptions to accidents that result in major traffic congestion.

Beginning this year the Town of Clayton was able to save several thousand dollars when Johnston County implemented the CodeRed system. The two agencies agreed to share use of the system so that both could save on cost and share a common database. All residents should be aware that hereafter the Town of Clayton will subscribe to CodeRed through Johnston County Emergency Services. The system accesses large, existing databases of phone numbers as a means to create the local call list, but the emergence of Internet based phone services, wireless phone providers, and other circumstances mean that not every number in Town is included.

All residents are strongly encouraged to participate in the system.

If you are a resident and have never received an automated call from the Town of Clayton you are likely not on the call list as we have used the system to great benefit over the past few years. In addition, you can subscribe more than one number to the system which is useful for residents who have land lines and cell phones. If you were previously subscribed to the Town of Clayton system then your number will be transferred to the Johnston County database. With the new subscription you will be able to receive calls relevant to Town of Clayton public notifications as well as calls impacting the larger area of Johnston County.

Under the new Johnston County based subscription residents will have the choice of subscribing to storm notifications wherein they will receive a call notifying them of severe thunderstorm conditions or tornado warnings. You can and should subscribe to the CodeRed public message service whether or not you prefer to receive storm notifications. The two services are not bundled unless you choose them.

The Town does not overuse the system so you need not worry about receiving a large number of aggravating calls which interrupt your evening dinner. Likewise, the call list is private and confidential. We do not distribute it to anyone for other uses. Take a few minutes to click on the link below and enter your call information. If you are already in the database, no worries, it will sort out the duplicate record. You will not receive two calls to the same number.

Also, people from around the Town, County, and State access our website for useful information on events and the like, but only residents within the Town of Clayton and Johnston County are eligible for participation in our CodeRed calling system so if you submit a number with an address that is outside of the Town/County your contact will not be added to the list.
