Site Being Prepared for "Centerpiece"
Town work crews have begun preparing the empty lot at the corner of Main and Lombard Streets for construction in the spring that will turn it into a downtown "centerpiece."
They're removing trees, along with other work, including removing the granite installed on the site more than a hundred years ago as part of the old Ashley Horne home that once stood there. The granite will be reused in the new project.
"We're very much looking forward to seeing the area take shape into something beautiful," said Mayor Jody McLeod. "We're expecting it to be a great boost for downtown."
Once completed, the project will add beauty to the area and give shoppers a place to meet and relax. It will also be the new home of the Clayton Farmers Market.
Plans for construction should be finalized by the end of the month. Officials expect work to begin by May.
On-street parking on the north side of Main Street will be limited during construction, but officials intend to add a few temporary 30-minute-limited spaces on the street between Flowers by the Neuse at 321 E. Main and Fine Jewelry by Vincent at 335 E. Main during the construction process.
