Spring Book Sale at Library Offers Bargains

Thousands of books, DVDs and videotapes will be on sale at low prices Saturday, March 20 at the downtown Hocutt-Ellington Memorial Library as part of the Friends of the Library Spring Book Sale.

Both new and used children's books will be on sale, too.

Proceeds from the event—planned for 8 am to 2 pm—will go toward a new Computer Lab at the Library.

"We will offer a variety of used books--fiction, nonfiction, inspirational, cookbooks, textbooks and classics," said Librarian Kristi Lesmann.  "We invite you to come, browse and fill one of our provided bags for only $10.00.  You won’t find a better bargain anywhere."

Most of the books in the fundraising sale are duplicates that the Library doesn't have room to keep, though some have been donated by residents especially for the book sale as a way to help the Library raise money.

Activities for children are also planned, including refreshments, face-painting and a visit from Clifford, the Big Red Dog, and Ms. Frizzle from the Magic School Bus series.

People from all over the area have crowded into the Library for sales like this over the last few years, taking thousands of books home with them and raising thousands for a new computer lab. The atmosphere has been similar to the floor of the New York Stock Exchange as frenzied people crowd the aisles, carrying books, DVDs and videotapes by the armload. Children of all ages move in and out with painted faces, adding to the carnival atmosphere.
