Businesses Must Install Backflow Protectors

Over the next few weeks, about 100 businesses will receive information regarding the need and importance to install an appropriate backflow prevention device on their plumbing. The notices are the next phase of a town-wide project to have all businesses install the devices in accordance with Local, State, and Federal drinking water rules. In total about 400 locations remain to have the devices installed while about 380 locations already have the devices in place. Until now, the program has been focused on new construction and renovations, as well as landscape irrigation systems. But beginning in 2012, the program will be extended to all businesses. Proper backflow prevention is essential to protect the public water supply from contamination by bacteria or chemicals that can be syphoned from private plumbing into the Town’s water distribution system. Town officials intend to begin notifying businesses of the requirement early in the new year. Once notified, businesses will have ninety days to install and test a device.
