Several New Arts Classes Beginning in March
The Parks & Recreation Department has several new arts classes, including classes for young children, beginning soon at both the new Clayton Community Center on Amelia Church Road and The Clayton Center downtown.
The classes are open to both residents and non-residents. Registration is being handled at the Community Center.

Here's a look at what's being offered:
LOOK AT ART
Join us for a new class where we look at and talk about art. Learn things to look for and share your reactions and points of view. This Art Appreciation “LITE” course will focus on class interaction and fun while learning something about art. The class will end with a trip to the newly renovated NC Museum of Art to look at some of the works we have discussed Mondays - 6:30-7:30pm; March 7-April 11; Ages 18 & up; $30/resident/six week class, $45/non-resident/six week class; Instructor - Lisa Bailey
COPPER ENAMELING
Experience the thrill of copper enameling while creating jewelry or copper accessories for home or garden. Investigate the enameling process from preparing the copper through applying enamel colorants to quick kiln firing. CONTINUING CROCHET
If you already know the basics of crochet and want to go further this course is for you. This course is for the advanced beginner through intermediate. Time will be given for a short review of the crochet basics, as taught in the Beginning Crochet class, and then new stitches will be introduced by making smaller items such as coasters or bookmarks. Once you've mastered the crochet techniques presented, you move on to the larger, main item. Topics covered are patterns such as basic ripples, shell and puff stitches, increases, decreases, gauge and edgings. Supplies included. PAINTERLY PRINTMAKING: WATERLESS LITHOGRAPHY
Using exciting & safe printmaking methods, students will create a three colored hand pulled original print. Black and white drawings will be enhanced with colored flats and painterly washes to create exciting original prints. Representational, as well as, non representational images will be accommodated. Students will learn how to print on a modern etching press. Bring drawings or ideas that will fit a 5 x 7” plate. YOUNG AT ART - PRE-SCHOOL ART
This four week class is designed for young preschoolers with a parent or caretaker. The class introduces our youngest artist to shapes, primary colors, and hands on fun. We will explore and experience different media. We will paint, print, sculpt, create paper collages, and self portraits. Please provide children with appropriate clothing. It can be messy. All supplies will be provided. Registration fee covers one child and one adult. PRINTMAKING: TURNING DRAWINGS INTO PRINTS
Student will explore exciting drawing techniques such as contour, gesture and positive / negative space. Using pencils, & sharpies finished drawings will be turned into a set of original prints. Students will learn how to print using hand printing techniques and press printing. KIDS IN CLAY
Children, ages 5-8, will learn basic handbuilding techniques like pinch pots, coils and slab projects. They will create fun and functional items that they will glaze, take home and use. An emphasis on creative expression will be encouraged. TEXTURES IN HANDBUILDING
Lots of fun is in store while you make both functional and decorative pottery using a variety of techniques, including structures from slabs, coils, and pinch pots. There will be a heavy emphasis on texture, employing numerous texture-making tricks the teacher uses in his own work. BEGINNING HANDBUILDING BASICS
An introductory six week class in hand building designed for everyone. Learn to make tiles, trays, vases, mirrors, boxes, and more using the slab roller and your hands. Students will explore several surface decorating techniques using simple tools, found objects and glazes. A 10-visit studio card is included.
