Officer Duran is Town's "Employee of Year"
Officer Miguel Duran of the Clayton Police Force has been named the Town of Clayton 2010 "Employee of the Year."
The 34-year-old father of three has been a member of the Department's Patrol Division for the last three years and one of the town's most visible policemen. He was nominated for the honor by several of his co-workers and won the support of the town's department heads.
"It was a total surprise," Miguel said. "I've seen others win the honor, but I never saw myself in that position."
He said police work " is ever evolving, and it fits me very well."
"It's natural for me," Miguel said. "I'm happy to represent the town in a good fashion every day. I think that's what I'm most proud of."
Miguel, who speaks both Spanish and English and often serves as an interpreter for the Department, got his Basic Law Enforcement Training at Johnston Community College, and he's still a student there, working on a degree in Criminal Justice Technology. His goal is to someday move into administration.
"It's a career for me," he said.
His supervisor, Captain John Coley, praised Miguel's dedication and his calm demeanor.
"Officer Duran is an exceptional individual," Captain Coley said. "He has an outstanding work ethic and is vital to the day-to-day operation of the police department."
Miguel came to Clayton from the Selma police force, which he joined in 2003 after several years as a landscaper. He said the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks had a deep effect on him and led to his decision to move into law enforcement.
"That's what started it," he said, "and it seemed to fit me."
He's also a member of the Parental Advisory Council at Clayton Middle School, which, he said, has been useful in getting to know members of the community.
Last year's honored employee was IT Technician Tommy Roy, who helps keep the town's computer systems up and working.
