Large Crowd Helps Open Community Center

A large crowd of more than 200 residents, including dozens of youngsters, helped officially open the new Clayton Community Center April 11, looking in on classrooms, bouncing basketballs, producing their own art and having fun in the play area.

The 30,000-sq.ft. facility was in active use, with games in the new gymnasium, special presentations of arts and athletics as well as special activities for young children.

After opening remarks by several speakers, including Mayor Jody McLeod, Town Manager Steve Biggs and Parks & Recreation Director Larry Bailey, the Mayor handled the official ribbon cutting and the crowd poured into their new Community Center.

"This is very exciting," said resident Debbie Romano, who attended the grand opening with her son Jack. "It's awesome."

Some watched classroom demonstrations, others took in fitness classes and still others made use of the athletic areas and children's learning and play areas.

"This facility is something everybody can be proud of," said Bailey, who pushed for years to get the Center built. "I'm especially pleased that so many came out to see their new Community Center. We have couples, families---people from all walks of life out here for the opening. We're all so happy to see this day come."

During his opening remarks to the crowd, Bailey said the new building "has many unique features and spaces that provide opportunities for all kinds of programs."

"Establishing The Clayton Center and Town Hall in downtown Clayton changed the image and quality of life in Clayton," he said, "This Community Center will have that same impact. The lessons that happen in this building will extend beyond the score of a game or a picture hanging on the wall. They are lessons about life and living. With so many issues facing our population today, including stress, inactivity, childhood obesity and health conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure on the increase, this facility and the programs provide opportunities for us to work toward a healthier lifestyle."

Mayor McLeod called it "a great day for Clayton."

"I assure you that when you walk through the doors of this facility, you will be blown away," he said.

Town Manager Biggs, a strong supporter of the new facility, drew a long round of applause when introduced. He said town officials "are extremely pleased and proud."

"This was a tough project, sort of like going to the dentist," he told the crowd. "We've been going to the dentist for a long while now, but today we have a big, bright smile on our faces."

The Parks & Recreation staff moved into the new complex some time ago, but getting started with classes and programs, as well as the official opening, was delayed while streets and traffic control near the facility were upgraded to safely handle the anticipated traffic flow.

The complex also features a childcare center, an indoor elevated walking track and a lighted patio suitable for events and receptions.

Officials hope to add another gymnasium and a swimming pool in years to come.
