Neighbors and Newcomers Club Cleans Up

Those folks you saw picking up litter all over town this Spring were members of the Neighbors and Newcomers Club, the first civic group to heed Mayor Jody McLeod's call for help in solving the town's litter problem.

Eighteen members of the club, dressed in safety vests and using orange trash bags supplied by the town, scoured sections of Powatan Road, Covered Bridge Road and Highway 42 East. They filled up 81 trash bags of litter.

"I'm sure I speak for everyone in Clayton when I say 'Thank You,'" the Mayor said. " These people have a love and respect for their town that's exciting to see."

The club offers both newcomers and longtime residents an opportunity to make new friends, enjoy shared interests and get better acquainted with the community. For more information about the club, please check out the website at www.claytonnewcomers.com or please call Dianne Carroll at 553-8818.

Upset by sights of litter on town roads and streets, the Mayor called on civic clubs a few weeks ago to help keep the town free of litter after the topic bubbled up at a Town Council meeting. Since then, local police have begun a strict enforcement of anit-littering laws and the County Sheriff's Department has been asked to help.
