Hundreds Crowd Downtown for Farmers Market

Hundreds of people from all over the area crowded into downtown Saturday morning for the opening day of the town's first Farmers Market.

Some came for the ceremonies, which featured Mayor Jody McLeod, Congressman Bob Ethridge and Market Chair Amber Polk. Others came for the festivities, which featured hourly raffles, live bluegrass music and other activities.

But, most came for the local honey, herbs, plants, mushrooms, baked goods, homemade candles and other fare. By early afternoon, most of the vendors were sold out. Officials expect even bigger crowds when produce begins to come in.

"Opening day for the Clayton Farm and Community Market was by all measures a success," said Downtown Development Coordinator Bruce Naegelen.

Only six vendors set up booths Saturday, but that number is expected to grow as the year goes on. Organizers are planning for 10 to 15 vendors at the Market on a regular basis.

The Market will open each Saturday morning at 8 am and close at 1 pm during the spring, summer and early fall. Organizers say it will provide an economic boost for the downtown area by bringing people to Town Square on Saturdays.
