Nancy Medlin Named Deputy Town Manager

Nancy Medlin, an award-winning finance director here for the last 10 years, has been named the town's first Deputy Town Manager.

She is directly responsible for management of the Finance, Customer Service and Information Services Departments while working alongside Town Manger Steve Biggs. She will also have the authority of Town Manager in his absence.

Biggs said the new position, created a few weeks ago by the Town Council, “represents a progressive step forward in management of the Town and is reflective of the growing complexity of operating a thriving, full service municipal operation in the Triangle area during this time of change.”

Biggs said Medlin, who has won her profession's highest honor for the last seven years in a row, is “highly qualified” to assume the new position.

“She has been an indispensable part of the Town of Clayton management team assisting with project management duties in several Town departments and as a resource in development of the annual budget, capital improvements plan and financial modeling that led, in part, to the success of the recent bond program,” Biggs said. “She will take an active role in capital planning, public information initiatives, trend analysis, strategic problem solving, research and reporting.”

Biggs said the Town will begin an immediate search for a new Finance Director. Medlin will continue to lead the Finance Department, serving a dual role until a replacement is in place.

Medlin left the North Carolina Local Government Commission in 1998 to join the town staff as Finance Director. Her department's 2006-2007 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) was awarded a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada. It's the highest honor they award. It is the seventh consecutive year she has won the award.

“I've very much enjoyed my years as Finance Director,” Medlin said, “and I look forward to the challenges of my new position. We have an excellent staff here in Clayton, and I look forward to working with them to provide the level of service that residents here need and expect.”
