Library Hopes to Lure Teens With Unusual Food
The Hocutt-Ellington Library has come up with a novel idea for luring local teens to the first meeting of the Library's Teen Book Club on Friday—serve puppy chow.
The recipe will be drawn from the Club's first book, No More Dead Dogs by Gordon Korman.
"Except, it's puppy chow for human consumption," said Children's Librarian Kristi Lesmann. "The recipe includes chocolate and lots of peanut butter."
Experience has shown that having food available increases attendance, she said, and this year the Library wants to make the food more fun by drawing ideas from the book being discussed.
"We'll sit down and discuss a book and eat the recipe that goes along with it," Kristi said. "That's pretty much how to get teens involved. I think it will be fun."
The Club meets at the Library each Friday at 3 pm. Please call or stop by the Library to join.
Kristi wants all Club members to go ahead and read the first book on the list, No More Dead Dogs, and be ready to discuss it at the first meeting, as well as eat some homemade puppy chow.
Other books to read for discussion include The House of Scorpion by Nancy Farmer, Al Capone Does My Shirts by Gennifer Choldenko, The Ousiders by S.E. Hinton and Stuck in Neutral by Terry Trueman.
The Library also has a Kids & Tween Book Club that meets an hour earlier each Friday at 2 pm. It helps children transition from picture books to regular books.
