Welcome the Town of Clayton, North Carolina

Is your home safe?  Is your family safe? It all begins with understanding.

Clayton Fire Department’s Life Safety information is designed to provide you with the tools and knowledge you need to prevent fires and emergencies before they happen, and live safely at home and work.  Outside of fighting fires, our Clayton Fire Department feels very strongly about educating the public on safety around fires.

In Your Home

Do you know what you need to do when a fire breaks out in your home?  We do and we want to help to make sure that all the families in our area are as safe as they can be.  One of the first things we suggest for families to learn about are Fire Safety tips.  This is a great brochure that you can print out and go over with ALL of the members of your family.  To help educate kids on the importance of being safe around fire, Sparky the Fire Dog helps us out!  Learn all about Sparky here.  Sparky lets kids know how important it is to have a Home Fire Escape Plan and how important it is to have a Family Fire Checklist.  It is best to go over this checklist with your children and practice.  It is a great way to ensure that EVERYONE is safe!  We have a handy brochure, Children and Fire Don't Mix!, that gives parents help determining if their child has a fire setting behavior.

Fire Prevention & Safety Information

Now that you know what you are going to do to set up your plan to keep your home and family safe, here are some specific hints and tips to keep specific parts of your home safe.  In the kitchen is a great idea to have a fire extinguisher close by.  This information sheet gives you information on how to take care of your fire extinguisher and where to store it.  You never know when a grease fire will break out on your stove!  Keeping safe in the kitchen is a big deal!  Holiday Cooking is where many people get into trouble.  Click here to find out more information about the different things that can happen with holiday cooking.  If a fire should break out, it is important to follow the information here but once the fire is out, there is going to be a lot that needs to be done.  Follow these steps and keep in mind that you have any questions or problems, we are always available for help.  You can call us at (919) 553-1520.

Fire Inspections

Inspections are based on one, two, and three year cycles.

1 Year - Hazardous, institutional, high rise assembly. Daycare and Foster care fall into this category. The North Carolina fire code does not cover residential inspections, except for the two mentioned.

2 Year - Industrial, and educational, except for public schools (the county takes care of all schools)

3 Year - Assembly occupancies with occupant load less than 100, business, mercantile, storage, churches, synagogues, and miscellaneous group "U" occupancies.

Inspection fees are based on square feet with the minimum charge of $40.00 for 3,000 ft. or less.  When applying for Clayton utilities, at that time you will pay the fee for a Fire Inspection, and Customer Service will forward all the information to the Fire Marshal. The Fire Marshall contact number is on application form, so the owner can call for an inspection.  New construction, up-fits to existing businesses, sprinkler or fire alarm installations that require plans/permits, normally are provided Inspection information at time of permit.  If you have any questions concerning inspections, fire codes, or if an inspection is required, call the Fire Marshal's office at 919-553-1577.  The Fire Marshal only covers the Town of Clayton city limits and ETJ. Outside of these areas, inspections are performed by Johnson County Inspections, and their number is 919-989-5060.
