Love 'em or hate 'em - our Sculpture Trail has downtown talking!
Town leaders, along with Clayton's Public Art Advisory Board, couldn't be prouder of the eight creative and visually enhancing pieces that will grace our parks, open spaces and town buildings into 2015. From the depiction of a Mayan God ascending as the sun to a love poem sculpted out of steel, this year's pieces will surprise and delight our visitors and residents alike.
There are 8 locations, including three in Horne Square on Main Street, two in Town Square, one at the Clayton Library, one at The Clayton Center, and one in the circle on the East Front Street extension. Each sculpture is accompanied by a plaque recognizing the artist and incorporating a scannable code that allows visitors to use their mobile devices to watch a video and learn more about each piece and its artist right there as they stand in front of the sculpture! They were reviewed and selected by a committee of local artists, business owners, Town staff and the Public Art Advisory Board. All the selected artists receive a $1,000 honorarium for lending their sculpture to us for the coming year, from May 1, 2014 to May 1, 2015. In addition, each artist will be eligible to compete in a People's Choice vote in which the public selects the winner of an additional $1,000 award. The artists are also featured on brochures that are distributed to businesses and organizations throughout the area.
“I’m really proud of the work of the Public Art Advisory Board,” said Mayor Jody McLeod. “This is exactly the type of project that helps us promote our goal of securing the Town of Clayton as an art community.”
